Well, well, well. Looks like we’ve been surprised.
Pop megastar Katy Perry pulled a Beyonce on us all and released a surprise single titled “Rise”. The new single sees Perry straying from her signature bubblegum-pop and adopting a new moodier sound.
Thematically, the song is a classic Katy Perry song, but sonically it marks a few changes. The single was produced by Max Martin and written by Martin, Savan Kotecha & Ali Payami, instead of frequent collaborator Dr. Luke, possibly due to his recent legal issues with pop singer Kesha.
“Don’t be surprised. I would still rise” sings Perry in the darker but uplifting new track. According to several sources, Perry’s “Rise” will be used for the upcoming NBC Olympics as an anthem leading up to and throughout the 2016 Rio Olympics.
âThis is a song thatâs been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface. I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite,â said Katy Perry. âI know that together we can rise above the fear â in our country, and around the world. I canât think of a better example than the Olympic athletes, as they gather in Rio with their strength and fearlessness, to remind us how we ALL can come together, with the resolve to be the best we can be. I hope this song can inspire us to heal, unite, and rise together. I am honored that NBC Olympics has chosen to use it as an anthem before and during the Rio Games.â
