Indie pop darling Bridgit Mendler performed her first South by Southwest show last night at Karma Lounge in Austin, Tx.
The ex-Disney star recently relaunched her music career, getting rid of the sugar-coated, bubblegum tunes that kickstarted her career and adopting a new soulful, alternative persona.
Mendler performed songs off her newest EP titled Nemesis, including single “Atlantis”, unreleased songs like the showstopping “Flowers”, a track that showcased the singer’s wide range and tone, an acoustic cover of The Black Eyed Peas’ “Where Is The Love”, and a slowed down rendition of her first hit “Ready more »
Francis Starlite, best known as Francis and The Lights, took the stage at the South by Southwest LEVI’S Outpost on March 14th, 2017.
The up-and-coming electronic musician and frequent collaborator of Chance The Rapper and Bon Iver, charmed the intimate performance’s crowd with electro-pop glitchy melodies, his distinctive voice and interesting, awkward but endearing dance moves reminiscent of those of fellow pop artist Lorde. Australian internet sensation Troye Sivan took the stage at Pandora Discovery Den on Saturday, March 19 for his second and last show during South by Southwest in Austin, TX.
Small and shaggy-haired, Sivan introduced himself to the adult crowd with album cut “Bite”, a semi-mysterious, lullaby-like dark tune off his debut album Blue Neighbourhood, which was released in December of last year. Mexican pop duo Jesse & Joy performed at the Spotify House during SXSW Music Festival on March 16th. The pair of siblings, composed by Jesse and Joy Huerta, typically perform in Spanish but decided to perform their hit songs in English in an attempt to expand to American audiences.
The short set consisted of English versions of their hits including “Corre” and “Ecos de Amor” and the original Spanish version of their debut single “Espacio Sideral”. Country princess Kacey Musgraves headlined SXSW’s Spotify House on March 16th, preceded by acts such as Mexican duo Jesse y Joy and Alternative Country artist Rayland Baxter.
The Texas native’s set consisted of 14 songs, pulled from both of her chart-breaking studio albums and some covers, including a twangy, harmonica-based cover of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”. Set highlights were her 2013 hit song “Follow Your Arrow”, during which the passionate fans screamed back every single lyric while Musgraves standed in awe. “Hell yeah, Texas. Newcomer Christopher Gallant, best known as Gallant, wowed a huge crowd on Tuesday, March 17 at the We DC Showcase at the Scoot Inn in Austin, TX.
The singer-songwriter performed 5 songs from his upcoming album Ology, which will be released on April 6th via indie label Mind of Matter. Set highlight was the overnight hit “Weight In Gold”, which catapulted the musician into stardom.
